When You Wish Upon a Star
Sometimes we all feel a little lost. We find ourselves adrift on the sea of life, feeling alone and miles away from anyone and anything that might offer us comfort. No matter which direction we look in, all we can see is an empty, dark, and endless horizon. It may seem scary, or lonely, or hopeless, but all hope is not lost. We have but to look up and find that one bright star that we can hold on to. One sole star that we can make our wish upon and find comfort and hope in.
For thousands of years we humans have been taking to the seas and venturing forth into the unknown and, for the vast majority of that time, we had naught but the stars to guide us. For this reason, sailors had as much of a bond with the stars in the night sky as they did with the sea itself. The sea was there to challenge them and, much like many things in life, there was no way around it. They simply had to take the challenges it presented head on and find a way to survive and overcome them.
There may have been nights, or weeks on end even, when their stars would have been hidden from sight, but they knew they were still there and would soon re-emerge to once again offer their guiding light. Life can be just like this sometimes, and it can be hard to trust that those metaphorical stars are still there for us. Sometimes they aren’t even hidden, we just spend so long looking at where we THINK they should be that we don’t give ourselves the time to realize they are just in a slightly different place than we expected.
Some evening when you are feeling overwhelmed, unfocused, or just like you need a reminder, take a few minutes and just look up to the night sky. Try to calm your mind and just take a few deep breaths and enjoy the sight of the magnificent view above. The sheer scale of our universe alone is often enough to make all our little daily stresses seem tiny and insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
Even in the middle of the day, you can try this same thing. Not with the actual sky and stars of course, but you can close your eyes and breath slowly and deeply into your whole being. You can give yourself some time to think about your life and find that one thing, that one metaphorical star, or constellation of stars, that you can hold onto through the roughest seas and the darkest of nights. Hold it close in your heart and let it light your way.
It doesn’t have to be anything monumental, it can be the tiniest little speck of light in your life. Chances are, the longer you look for them, the more little stars you’ll be able to see and before you know it, you’ll know you’re right where you are meant to be and what direction you need to head in. It really does work!
When I sat down to write this evening I was so overwhelmingly happy and giddy I could hardly contain myself, let alone focus enough to compose any manner of coherent thoughts in my head. Someone suggested that I put on some classical piano music, take a few deep breaths, and look up to the stars for a few moments. It is to her that I must credit the inspiration behind this post, for I would not have considered doing that if she had not suggested it.
With the motion activated security light and the street lights on, I couldn’t see as many stars as I usually can on a nice clear evening where I live but I looked anyway. I found one in particular that held my gaze and so I just stood there staring up at it, breathing slowly and steadily. I found that one solitary star to be extremely comforting for some reason.
Thinking about what I would wish for if it could grant me anything my heart desired, I found I only wished to express my gratitude for the many blessings I have in my life. I felt I was exactly where I was meant to be right then, and that the intense peace I felt was enough for now. Anything else I could have asked for I knew would be presented in due time when the moment was right for it. I wished that others might be able to find the same sense of peace and gratitude in their own lives and that I might, in some way, serve to help some of them do so.
As I stood there reveling in that sense of peace and absolute contentment, I realized that sometimes all you need is just that one little star in your life to put things in perspective and make all seem right in the world. I know that I shall never be able to adequately describe the feelings I experienced or the power I felt behind that realization, but I knew I needed to at least attempt to share it. Perhaps I managed to do that for some of you, or perhaps it’s something you must find for yourselves. Maybe some of you have already found it and know exactly what I am finding to be so ineffable.
Whichever category you fall into, I want to thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts and this amazing love I feel within. It’s a truly incredible feeling and I sincerely wish that you all have or will soon find it in your own lives!
